Prei Monti is the place to go if you're seeking an adventure and enjoy a challenge. Surrounded by untamed Cambodian jungle, this small temple is believed to have been built in the 9th century.
Prei Monti is one of the first monuments that emerged at the dawn of the Angkor Empire with three brick towers that open to the east and share a single platform. Dedicated to the Hindu God Indra, there are varying accounts as to who actually built Prei Monti, because its history has been lost through the ravages of time.
However the fun is getting there and that is quite an adventure, which should only be attempted on motorbike or bicycle. Even then it's rough and challenging because of the numerous pot holes along the way – but hey, that's part of the fun!
In the wet season, there's plenty of large puddles on the unfinished road as you weave through small villages, rice paddies, and untamed rainforrest.
If you're cycling it's highly recommended that you take plenty of water and some snacks to keep you going. Be aware that, because of the terrain, it may take you a bit longer than you think and we advise going to Prei Monti well before dark because it can be quite hazardous getting back out at night without light.
Check out our interactive Siem Reap Temple Map for more information on the temples and how to get there.
