For the first time in Cambodia's six-year history of Gay Pride, the event was split between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in 2018. Pride always attracts a huge crowd, eager to participate in the great line up of activities, with one of the many star attractions being The Gay-Mazing Tuk-Tuk Race.
The race is a 2.5 hour battle around Siem Reap to find various location and clues. The course in 2018 comprised of 7 stops around the town, all with various missions to perform once arriving. Skilled tuk-tuk drivers who know the area well were employed for the event, helping immensely with the often strange tasks.
Meeting at Lub-D before the race, participants had the opportunity to decorate their tuk-tuks in any fashion they chose – and they looked great! From hanging branches of ferns and fruit to balloons and tinsel, the participants were in full swing, while some were even wearing face paint to mark the occasion.
As the 15 teams of 2 to 4 people whiz through the town, each team gathers clues in a different order, to avoid an influx of contestants in any one place. The brightly coloured tuk-tuks are a sight to be seen, zipping around town to the cheers of onlookers.
With the finishing destination back at Lub-D, everyone enjoyed sitting around its crystal clear pool, sipping on refreshing cocktails as the winners were announced. With cheers to be had, and a great day of fun, the festivities continued into the small hours of the morning, with many going home covered in glitter.
