The countryside around Siem Reap is perfect for bird lovers. Explore wetlands and grasslands of Siem Reap, Tmatboey, and Prek Toal. Visit the Tonle Sap Lake to sight birds such as white-shouldered ibises and Bengal floricans. The best time to visit for birdwatchers is between November and March each year.

Sam Veasna Centre

The Sam Veasna Centre for Wild Life Conservation has a goal to sustain Cambodia's unique wildlife and provide alternative, sustainable livelihoods for local people from the profits of ecotourism. In return for the income and employment received by this program, the local community are asked to sign a “No Hunting and Land Use Agreement”, which is monitored by the Ministries of Environment and Forestry Patrol Teams, advised by WCS.

The centre is a Non-Profit Organisation and all proceeds are invested back into local communities, promoting good environmental stewardship. By choosing to see Cambodia’s spectacular wildlife you are giving local Communities the choice of an alternative way of living.

Who Was Sam Veasna?

Sam Veasna was a pioneering Cambodian Naturalist who surveyed the Northern Plains, looking for now-extinct Kouprey. He was responsible for discovering and cataloging many of the most important sites of conservation in Cambodia.

Sam Veasna died in 1999 at the age of 33 from Malaria - the centre was set up in his honour to continue promoting conservation throughout the country. The Centre offers a number of bird watching experiences including:

  • Siem Reap Half Day Bird tours

  • Temple and Birds Tour

  • Ton Sap Water Birds and Floating Village Adventure

  • Wild Cambodia

The Sam Veasna Centre currently has 8 English-speaking guides, who are experts in finding Cambodia’s special birds and highly knowledgeable about these sites.
