Jailbreak is a big step forward for the burgeoning film industry in Cambodia and its release was a red-carpet event. Jailbreak is a genre-busting Khmer film that bucks the trend of traditional romance or supernatural productions.
It's a first-of-a-kind action movie, which smashes the mould of traditional film making and is now creating a new benchmark in Cambodian cinema. The entire film is spoken in Khmer but has subtitles in English, so it has both local and international appeal.
The film was released in Cambodia on January 31 2017 and received critical acclaim, both at home and abroad. In July 2017, Jailbreak was shown in Montreal at the Fantasia International Film Festival, as well as a host of other competitions. Receiving both overseas and local media coverage, the film has been shown in over 20 countries and has won multiple awards.
The plot starts when the Cambodian police arrest a mobster, who is sent to jail and goes by the name of Playboy. The police presume he is the head of the notorious gang that rules the streets - but they're wrong. The real gang leader is Madame Butterfly – someone you wouldn't want to cross.
Realising that Playboy is about to squeal on her, Madame Butterfly puts a bounty on his head, which sparks a prison riot. This leads to a manhunt for Playboy because the police want to save their key-witness, but Madame Butterfly has other plans.
Jailbreak is directed by Italian-born Jimmy Henderson, who has been working in both London and Cambodia for the past 12 years. Henderson is a pioneer in the drive to widen the genres of film production in Cambodia to diversify from conventional themes and topics.
Teaming up with Kongchak Pictures, a local production house interested in fostering Cambodia’s new direction, Jail Break is fracturing all local industry standards. This all comes in the wake of Angelina Jolie’s locally-filmed First They Killed My Father, which has also been acclaimed on the international stage and is hailed as a great step forward in the world of movie-making for Cambodia’s future.
